Busy/Eventful Day!?!?

Hello out there to anyone who is reading. It has been two days since we have had any contact with our “loved ones” who supposedly love us back. But enough of the sob story, I have more stuff to write for people who do not read it.

Yesterday, work was pretty eventful. Well, not the first 3.5 hours of the day, but the last 2 hours were. At 2 p.m. I met with the part time English teacher of Kishira Junior High School, the village 20 minutes south of the “downtown” or “urban concentration” in my town. Her English was excellent. Her pronunciation was superb. However, our meeting was brief and consisted of me reading out the conversations for the oral part of an exam. The conversation was recorded and will be played for students next Friday I believe. I will be there, but apparently not capable of speaking. At the end, we just began talking about my house and my predecessor. She complained that there were a lot of bugs. I kill maybe one or two a day which I don’t find to be much . . . . anymore. However, in my defense, I am giving the house a severe cleaning and reckon that it should be in better condition than when my predecessor had it. At mentioning Cristina as my fiancée, she told me that some of the kids had seen Cristina and I at the beach and insisted that she must have been my wife. I hope that we did not do something that was uncalled for. At most, we may have held hands.

After the meeting with the one English teacher, I was informed at the beginning of the week that I would have to partake in an English teacher’s meeting at 3 p.m. So, I got my notebook and pen and sat down with the other 4 teachers in the conference room. My direct supervisor walked in and spoke a little about me. Then, I had to introduce myself, in Japanese again. Then, my supervisor thanked me, got up, kind of lifted me out of the chair and escorted me out of the room. I guess all of that was just so they could meet me. I did not even meet them. This left me a bit upset.

After work, I went for . . . (drum roll please) . . . a jog. I went through the town in the little blocks and ended up in the cemetery which lead to the junior high school. After that I walked a bit along the beach before heading back to the main street. On the way home, I passed by the Katos’ home where I saw that dad, whom I greeted. They were excited to see me and invited me to dinner. I took the liberty of also inviting Cristina.

Before dinner, I did some of that severe cleaning I was talking about earlier. Specifically, I scrubbed my shower room floor which had some black stuff in the crevices and some algae from this wood carpet thing that is made for bathrooms but apparently not made to get wet. Anywho, the shower room now looks amazing (the floor and tub at least)!

Cristina and I then met at the Katos. It was delicious, of course. They taught us some Japanese, and we ate sashimi, potato salad, Japanese-style burgers, and grilled fish. I commented on the sashimi and asked where they bought it. They said that it was from the store 15 meters away from my house. They got a plate of about 30-40 tuna sashimi pieces about 2 inches long for $2. This is even cheaper than the grocery store where I had been buying it. They called the owner up to tell him how excited I was. His daughter married an American and is now living in Utah. We played with the baby, Yume, who looked much more adorable than before. The 10-month old would mimic our hand gestures and some of our sounds from time to time. Later on, one of the dad’s friends came to visit and he brought with him some plum juice/soda that was quite delicious and Dragon Fruit from Okinawa. This dragon fruit was both delicious and awesome to look at. It almost looked like a magenta flower. Then, when you slice it in half, its meat is kind of textured like a juicy cucumber that is colored white with lots of tiny black seeds. It was semi-sweet.

Something I have not mentioned is the approaching typhoon – typhoon 19. It is pretty string and is predicted to cover Kagoshima. I am not too worried because my big windows have built in shutters and Cristina’s entire house does as well. I think it is nothing you should worry about, but it is something you may want to be aware about. The people in my office check the predicted trajectory about 3 or four times a day from about 3 different web sites. It is quite funny I think. Well, that having been said, I think I am going to sign off now.
